TriHealth saved itself, one of the largest employers in the region, more than $1.3 million dollars in healthcare costs in one year.

At TriHealth Corporate Health, our focus is on working with local organizations to improve the health and productivity of their workforces. But as a division of TriHealth, we also tackle our own organization's employee health issues. With two major hospitals and more than 50 offsite locations, TriHealth is one of the largest employers in the Cincinnati region. We have over 10,000 employees (more than14,000 covered lives) enrolled in our healthcare benefit program. Our medical plan expense for this plan year is budgeted at almost $60M.

Here's just one example of an area where we identified a better way to do things and saved our organization significantly.

Problem:  Our data analytics program, TriHealth Analytics, showed that employee prescriptions for proton-pump inhibitors (PPI's, which are typically prescribed for individuals with heart burn and digestive issues) were a high cost area for the organization.

Solution: PPI's were identified as one area with the potential to decrease costs, while at the same time increasing the quality of life for employees. Employees who had been on PPI's for more than 60 days and didn't have a diagnosed condition that required long-term use were provided 60 days worth of a comparable over-the-counter medication that was free of cost to them. In addition, they worked with a pharmacist to learn more about their condition and modify their lifestyle and diet.

Outcome: TriHealth saved $1.3 million, and received positive feedback from employee participants who were empowered by a positive understanding of their health condition.
