We Saved Our Organization Millions; We Can Do the Same for Yours
Through Strong Collaboration with Human Resources and a Strategic Approach to Employee Health and Productivity, TriHealth Corporate Health Has Improved the Lives of Its Own 10,000+ Employees
When TriHealth Corporate Health was called on to reduce costs and improve health throughout the 10,000-employee TriHealth organization, we responded with unparalleled industry expertise, clear vision, and a commitment to listen to employee concerns and follow best practices.
What resulted was a five-year strategic plan in collaboration with TriHealth's Human Resources Department that included reviewing prescription drug usage, offering consumer-directed plans, introducing a wellness program called Lifestyles, offering a tobacco-free discount, and integrating our disability management efforts. The changes produced results that speak for themselves:
- Spent $14.3 million less than expected on healthcare for the organization (source: Mercer);
- Saved $1.1 million in Annual Absence Management (as compared to Pressley Reed benchmarks);
- Achieved Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO)/Mercer 2009 Best Practice score of 140 points out of a possible 200 points, compared to national average of 96. (The HERO Employee Health Management (EHM) Best Practice Scorecard is designed to help employers learn about and determine employee health best practices);
- Increased employee engagement by 12%;
- Saved $1.03 million with ProtonPump Inhibitor Program (net of program costs);
- Dropped Average A1C blood levels from 7.4 to6.9 for Type 1 and 2 Diabetes Program Participants (An individual's A1C should be below 7 according to bestpractices. The average cost for a diabetic yearly is $12,500 in medicaland pharmacy claims, while a non-diabetic costs $4300);
- Developed a stronger culture of wellness within TriHealth.
Through all the change, TriHealth was named a "Best Place to Work" by the Cincinnati Business Courier based on employee voting and feedback, as well as being in the "Best 100 Companies in the Country for Women" by Working Mother Magazine five years in a row.
How Did We Do It?
"We walk the talk of employee health and productivity every day in our own organization, and we've been helping greater Cincinnati employers do the same for more than 20 years," said Pam Shannon, vice president of TriHealth Corporate Health. "We know every company is unique, and 'one size fits all' doesn't work," she said.
Instead, TriHealth Corporate Health creates custom programs for each client, big or small. We assess their needs and help them decide where they want to go. That's just what we did for TriHealth, where key components for our success were close collaboration with Human Resources and strong vendor management.
As one of the largest employers in Cincinnati -- with thousands of employees at more than 60 sites around the region-- TriHealth faces a medical plan expense of almost $60 million a year. And TriHealth is like many organizations in that it has its share of poor employee health habits, overweight, lack of physical activity, chronic health conditions, and work/life balance challenges--all leading to rising healthcare costs.
TriHealth Corporate Health took an integrated approach that encourages and rewards good behaviors while directly addressing chronic health issues, and we're proud of our results: a healthier workforce and significant cost savings.
In the end, healthy employees help us in all aspects of our business. We're committed to the belief that employees who are well can better care for our patients and customers and set a good example for them.
At TriHealth Corporate Health we're walking the talk of employee health and productivity, and we can help your organization do the same.
